Wright's View

Wright's View
Ascending north toward Laporte on the three lane
Route 220, on your left old 220 climbs the same mountain. If your
pace is not hurried, take time to use the old approach to town. Just
about the spot that the air changes to cooler and crisper, a blue
marker and pull-off spot alerts the traveler to a spectacular view.
On the new highway, a signs merely states "Scenic Overlook". The
marker on the old road tells you that this is "Wright's View", named
for P. D. Wright, a former secretary of highways. Many of us, who
have traveled to Laporte for years, approching from the south, know
that we are "home" when we reach Wright's View. The valley below us,
the vista of North Mountain across the way, the change in the air;
it all spells home. It tells you to slow down and release your
tension. You are nearly there. You made it home, again. The late
John Denver knew the feeling when he wrote "Country Road, Take Me
Home" you "should have been home yesterday."
