The Laporte United Methodist Church. Located at the corner of Main and Beech Streets.

A Brief History

The Church was originally constructed as a Baptist Church during the summer of 1894 with the in kind labor of two skilled builders, subscriptions, and a $700.00 mortgage. It was completed in 1897 with the first service being held on December 26 of that year. The bell, which weighs 421 pounds and cost $112.00, was cast at the same foundry as the Liberty Bell. Miss Martha Armbruster, a teacher from Philadelphia who spent her summers in Laporte, donated the Bell. On November 2, 1921, the Methodist Conference purchased the Church from the Baptists for $700.00, the outstanding amount on the mortgage. The present cornerstone on the northwest corner reads: A. D. 1922. The church currently holds services every Sunday at 9:00 A.M. and welcomes members and visitors of any faith to attend services.

Saint Johns Episcopal Church

A Brief History

In 1847 Secu and Abigail Mylert deeded to the Sullivan County Commissioners two lots, Numbered 51 and 52, on the corner of Beech and Cherry Streets. They, in turn, deeded the land to the trustees of the Episcopal Diocese.
The first cornerstone was laid on September 22, 1868 by the Reverend William Bacon Strong. The contents of the box in the cornerstone were stolen that same night. The cornerstone with a new box was relaid August 4, 1888, by the Reverend Samuel P. Kelly. The building was completed January 1, 1889, at a cost of $2,550.00. The rectory was completed in November of 1889.
Stained Glass windows, electric service and the organ were purchased and donated to the church by benefactors over the years.
This church has blessed residents of Sullivan County, and many people from all parts of the country who have been summer residents of Laporte and Lake Mokoma, with regular services until the 1920's; summer services until the 1980's; and occasional service since then.

This writing was taken from the back of the Wedding Program of a young women from Williamsport, PA who chose to get married in the town she calls home.
